The Acoustical Society of the Netherlands, in Dutch, het Nederlands Akoestisch Genootschap, was established on October 12th 1934 and was in those days known as a Noise Foundation (in Dutch "Geluidstichting"). The founders in 1934 envisaged a broad organisation which, besides encouraging the development of a scientific approach to acoustics, would be occupied with acoustic consultancy and measurements and could also function as an anti-noise lobby. After the second world war the foundation focused more and more on the former objective; the latter was by now partly covered by other organisations, such as TNO Institute of Applied Physics and private acoustical consultants. The anti-noise lobby was eventually taken over by the Dutch Noise Abatement Society (NSG)

In 1962 this led, triggered by some legal aspects, to the change of name and objectives. The objective of the society is formulated as encouraging the development and application of the science of acoustics and acoustical techniques. To this aim the contact between acousticians is stimulated by regular scientific meetings, the contributions to which are published (over 150 publications till now). Also international congresses have been organised such as the first ICA-Congress in Delft (1953), the tenth Inter.noise in Amsterdam (1981) and the Inter.noise 2001 in the Hague. The NAG has also stimulated attention for acoustics in education. An example is the course in acoustics on an academic level, that since 1973 has been organised yearly in co-operation with the Belgium Acoustical Society (ABAV).

At present the NAG has approximately 500 members and about 20 sponsors from public organisations, consultants and industry. During its existence the Society has nominated eight members as honorary members in recognition of their scientific work and/or their activities for and within the Society.

In short the NAG

• encourages the science of acoustics and its application,
• organises scientific meetings four times a year,
• publishes lecture notes of the scientific meetings,
• publishes the NAG almanac every year, with general information about the Society and
• offers a chance to meet peers and exchange experiences.

Finally, the NAG membership includes a free subscription to the CD-ROM issue of “Acustica united with Acta Acustica”, which is published by the European acoustical society EEA, for a reduced price.

Het Nederlands Akoestisch Genootschap werd opgericht op 12 oktober 1934, en was destijds bekend als de Geluidstichting. In 1934 stond de oprichters een breed gerichte organisatie voor ogen die, naast de bevordering van de geluidswetenschap, zich bezig zou houden met advisering en met het uitvoeren van metingen op akoestisch gebied, en die bovendien zou functioneren als een anti-geluidsoverlast lobby. Na de tweede wereldoorlog concentreerde de stichting zich steeds meer op de bevordering en toepassing van de geluidswetenschap. De tweede doelstelling – advisering en uitvoeren van metingen – werd grotendeels overgenomen door andere organisaties zoals o.a. TNO en particuliere adviesbureaus. De functies van voorlichting en van anti-geluidsoverlast lobby werd later overgenomen door de huidige Nederlandse Stichting Geluidhinder (NSG).

Deze ontwikkeling leidde in 1962 tot de omvorming van de Geluidstichting in het Nederlands Akoestisch Genootschap. De doelstelling van deze vereniging werd de bevordering van de ontwikkeling en toepassing van de geluidswetenschap en geluidstechniek. Het NAG bevordert het contact tussen akoestici door regelmatige wetenschappelijke bijeenkomsten te organiseren. Van elke bijeenkomst worden de gepresenteerde lezingen gebundeld en gepubliceerd in het NAG-journaal. Tot nu toe zijn er circa 150 NAG-journalen verschenen. Daarnaast zijn er internationale congressen georganiseerd zoals het eerste ICA Congres in Delft (1953), het tiende Inter.noise congres in Amsterdam (1981) en het Inter.noise congres 2001 te Den Haag. Ook werd een grotere aandacht voor akoestiek in het technisch onderwijs door het NAG gestimuleerd. De cursus hogere akoestiek op academisch niveau, die sinds 1973 jaarlijks wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met het Belgische Akoestisch Genootschap (ABAV), is hiervan een voorbeeld.

Momenteel heeft het NAG circa 500 leden en ongeveer 20 sponsors vanuit overheidsorganisaties, adviesbureaus en de industrie. Gedurende zijn bestaan heeft het NAG tien leden benoemd tot erelid op basis van hun wetenschappelijk werk en/of hun activiteiten binnen het NAG.

Kortom, het NAG:

• stimuleert de geluidswetenschap en de toepassing daarvan
• belegt vier maal per jaar een wetenschappelijke bijeenkomst
• publiceert bijbehorende NAG-journalen, met daarin de gepresenteerde artikelen
• publiceert jaarlijks de NAG-almanak, waarin algemene informatie van het genootschap is opgenomen en
• brengt akoestici bij elkaar.

Tenslotte, het NAG-lidmaatschap is inclusief de CD-ROM versie van het tijdschrift “Acustica united with Acta Acustica”, dat wordt uitgegeven door de overkoepelende Europese organisatie EEA.

Het NAG telt momenteel circa 500 leden. Onze leden zijn afkomstig van vrijwel alle grote Nederlandse bedrijven, universiteiten, onderzoeksinstellingen, ministeries, provincies, grote gemeenten en vrijwel alle akoestische ingenieursburo’s.
